We know that every Welsh Italian is extremely proud of their heritage. Our families have strong connections to both Italy and Wales and our individual family histories are both colourful and fascinating. This summer, we have a unique opportunity to celebrate and document our vibrant heritage through a short film.

Nicky Gallani, a filmmaker of Welsh Italian heritage, is looking for people who would be happy to be interviewed for a short documentary about the Festa dell’Emigrante in Bardi, and the history of the Welsh Italian way of life.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking members of the Welsh Italian community with roots in Bardi, especially our elders, who have vivid memories and stories to share. Your experiences and recollections are invaluable, and we want to ensure they are preserved and celebrated.

Ideally, we are looking for interviewees who plan to visit Bardi for the Festa in August 2024, as we would like to film people in both in Wales and Italy.

We’re also interested in any archive stills or footage that people might have access to.

When and where will filming take place?

We are aiming to film some interviews in South Wales in July 2024 (a week in June 2024 may also be available), and in Bardi in August 2024.

What is the film for?

The Welsh Italian community has a unique and rich history. From the early migrants who left their homes in Italy to build new lives in Wales, to the strong community ties and traditions that have been maintained across generations. By sharing your memories, you help keep our shared heritage alive for future generations.

The completed film will be submitted to short film festivals, and hopefully made available to community centres, local cinemas etc. The film (or clips) could also be embedded in community websites, including our own.

How can you participate?

If you are interested in being part of this exciting project or know someone who might be, or you simply want to know more about the project, please contact Nicky Gallani as soon as possible at:

Whether you have personal memories, stories handed down through generations, or archival materials, your contribution is invaluable.

What do we have in mind?

To give you a flavour of the kind of project we have in mind, please take a look at a short film Nicky was involved with in 2016 about the London Italian community called Arrivederci Clerkenwell.
