Two large wind-farm projects – known as PARMA A and PARMA B – have been proposed for the ridges of the Parma Apennines. A new petition has been launched by residents who oppose the plans, citing concerns about the impact on the landscape, environment and local communities.

The proposals

PARMA A includes 22 turbines, each rated at 6.2 MW, with a total capacity of around 136 MW. PARMA B would extend the development across neighbouring communes, including Bardi, Bedonia, Compiano, Bore and Morfasso. The projects are currently undergoing environmental assessment (“VIA”) under national procedures.

Why people are concerned

Supporters of the petition highlight several issues:

  • The area’s ridges and valleys form part of a protected natural and cultural landscape.
  • Construction could affect habitats, land stability and the visual character of the mountains.
  • The terrain is considered hydro-geologically fragile, and the proposed works may increase the risk of landslides or erosion.
  • Local communities want more open consultation and alternatives to large industrial installations.

Public meeting

A public meeting was held in Bardi to discuss the “PARMA A” wind-farm project, you can see the film of that meeting here.
